Partner or 'Twin' Towns

Solihull has two partner or ‘twin’ towns, Main Taunus Kreis in Germany and Cholet in France.

Main Taunus Kreis is situated in the Rhein-Main region bordering the city of Frankfurt in the state of Hessen.  Main Taunus Kreis, or MTK for short, is made up of 12 towns and like Solihull has a mixture of town and country, urban and rural.

The region is bordered by the Taunus Mountains in the North and the river Main in the South.  There are many walking and bicycle routes – and vineyards and wineries to explore!  The nearby Frankfurt Airport is a large international hub.

The roots of the partnership between the two regions can be traced back to the late seventies and it was formally established in November 1992.  There are now strong and flourishing links between the Councils, several schools have links and opportunities for business, sporting and cultural exchanges are welcomed on both sides.

Cholet lies within the Pays de la Loire region of western France on the banks of the river Moine.  It has both historic and modern buildings and is famous for its textile industry, especially the production of its signature handkerchiefs.

Cholet is proud of its sport and culture as well as its other attractions.  It holds a huge and colourful Carnival every year and as well as the surrounding countryside you can also visit the nearby medieval theme park Puy du Fou.  The nearest international airport is in the regional capital of Nantes.

This partnership began in March 1999 and as above, links and exchanges are active and encouraged within education, business, sports and culture.

There is also a Twinning Association in Solihull, which organises visits to and from both partner towns for its members.
